Thomas Urbye: Colourist, The Look

At 29, Urbye is already considered one of the UK's premier colourists, but his technical versatility and business acumen also win plaudits. A Bournemouth Film School alumni, Urbye spent four years as senior online editor and colourist at MPC before breaking away to set up his own shop, The Look, in 2006. "Not only a very talented grader, but extremely knowledgeable about the technical side of his craft," declares DoP Tat Radcliffe, who chose Urbye to work his magic on Bafta-nominated C4 horror drama Dead Set and the BBC's acclaimed Criminal Justice II, of which Guardian critic Vicky Frost said, "It looks beautiful, a contained colour palette at times doing as much storytelling as the dialogue and score."

OCTOBER 2009: The Look has upgraded its Quantel Max system to an eQ, a move that will give us two online suites and allow our operators to share project work between systems. The move away from a single 'hero suite' will give our colourist Thomas Urbye the opportunity to handle the grade in one suite while the team do the rest of the online work in the other.

Urbye said: "While handling 'Criminal Justice', it became evident that if we were able to do the grade and the online simultaneously on an episode it would maximise the facility's efficiency as both Quantel systems share the same media and settings. The upgrade would also allow other client's projects to be run through the facility even during a major television series or feature."

"Previously, we could only use our Max system for conforming and deliverables, with grading and onlining taking place in our eQ suite. Now that we have two eQ's it means I can focus on grading, while leaving the team using the other eQ to do all the online and fixes, as well as the conforming and deliverables."

As part of the facility upgrade, the existing Quantel eQ has had a new PC fitted with faster Intel processors and increased RAM meaning operation will be even faster, with increased RED file import speeds.

SEPTEMBER 2009: The Look is delighted to announce that we are now offering Blu-ray playouts for our clients
